FAQ

THE PRODUCT

What is the FYA Dual-Fuel Bottle?

The FYA Dual-Fuel Bottle is a purpose-built bottle designed to keep hydration and fuel separate but always accessible.

Water sits in the insulated main chamber. Fast-acting fuel sits in a removable lower compartment.

One bottle. Two fuels. Less guesswork on busy sport days.

Why did you design it this way?

Because in youth sport, energy is often the missing piece — not effort or talent.

Fuel gets:

  • forgotten
  • mistimed
  • hard to access
  • left in the car or bag

We designed the bottle to remove friction.

If the bottle is there, both fuels are there.

Who is this bottle for?

We designed the Dual-Fuel Bottle with youth athletes at the centre — but we’ve been surprised by who else uses it.

We’ve seen:

  • adults taking it to work
  • parents using it on the sideline
  • parents sitting through long school assemblies with it
  • grandparents taking it on long walks

Good design tends to travel well. While youth sport is our mission, this bottle fits real life at every age.

Where is the bottle manufactured?

Our bottle is designed in New Zealand and manufactured in partnership with an experienced, audited facility overseas that specialises in stainless steel drinkware.

Manufacturing internationally allows us to use the right materials, processes, and quality controls while keeping the product accessible for families. Every unit is produced to our specifications and standards.

STAINLESS STEEL & BUILD QUALITY

What is the bottle made from?

The bottle is made from double-wall, food-grade SS304 stainless steel (inner and outer), chosen for safety, durability, and temperature control.

Key specifications:

  • Water capacity: 26oz / 770ml (insulated)
  • Fuel pod capacity: 6oz / 180ml (removable)
  • Finish: Durable powder-coat exterior
  • Insulation: Keeps drinks cold up to 24 hours; hot up to 12 hours
  • Lid: Leak-proof, lockable flip-top with one-click open, close & lock
  • Spout: High-flow, gulp-friendly for easy drinking during play
  • Fuel system: Separate water and fuel storage for better timing and access
  • Safety: BPA-free and lead-free materials
  • Cleaning: Designed with no hidden cavities where mould or bacteria can build up
  • Care: Hand wash recommended for longer product life
  • Durability: Built for gear bags, sideline drops, and daily use
Why stainless steel instead of plastic?

We chose stainless steel because it’s safer, tougher, and better suited to real sport life — especially for bottles that get used daily, thrown into gear bags, and exposed to heat, impact, and wear.

Health & safety

  • No chemical leaching: Food-grade stainless steel does not leach chemicals like BPA or phthalates into your drink. Even some BPA-free plastics can degrade over time — especially with heat, scratches, or heavy use.

  • More hygienic: Stainless steel is non-porous, which means it’s far less likely to hold onto bacteria, odours, or residue that can affect cleanliness and taste.

Durability & performance

  • Built to last: Stainless steel handles drops, knocks, and daily use far better than plastic, which can crack or weaken over time.

  • Better insulation: Double-wall stainless steel keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12 — something plastic simply can’t match.

  • Pure taste: It’s non-reactive, so your water tastes like water — not yesterday’s drink.

Environmental & long-term value

  • More sustainable: One well-made stainless steel bottle replaces countless disposable plastic bottles.

  • Better value over time: While stainless steel costs more upfront, it lasts longer and doesn’t need regular replacing like plastic bottles often do.

For us, stainless steel wasn’t a marketing choice — it was the right choice for safety, performance, and longevity in real sport environments.

FUEL & USE

What can go in the fuel compartment?

The fuel compartment is designed for sporting use, making it easy to carry fast-digesting fuels when energy is needed quickly.

Common options include:

  • gummies or chews
  • jellybeans or candy
  • cut fruit
  • dried fruit

That said, the compartment is not limited to sport fuel. Many people use it to carry other small foods for everyday situations — whether that’s snacks for long days, time on the sideline, work, school, or travel.

We recommend avoiding foods that melt easily or leave heavy residue, as they can be harder to clean.

Can liquids go in the fuel pod?

No. The fuel pod is designed for solid, whole-food fuel (like gummies, chews, or snacks) to support energy around training, games, and long sport days.

Liquids should go in the main bottle compartment, not the fuel pod.

This bottle supports smart fueling habits — it does not replace meals or balanced nutrition.

HEALTH, EDUCATION & GUIDANCE

Is this a medical or nutrition product?

No. The FYA Dual-Fuel Bottle is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice.

It is a practical tool designed to support better fueling habits alongside guidance from parents, coaches, and qualified professionals.

Do you provide nutrition advice?

We work alongside expert and elite sports nutritionists to create evidence-informed educational guidance.

We do not provide personalised nutrition plans at the moment but will look to in the future. If you get in touch at info@fuelingyouthathletes.com we can happily point you towards some of the best in the business.

Our role is education — helping families understand why and when fuel matters, not prescribing diets.

What is the Youth Fuel Guide?

Every bottle includes access to our Youth Fuel Guide — a clear, practical resource written in conjunction with an elite sports nutritionist and designed to help young athletes and families understand:

  • common fueling mistakes
  • why energy availability matters
  • simple habits that support performance, growth, and enjoyment
  • examples of meals and fuel at different times in relation to sporting activity

The guide is educational in nature and not a substitute for personalised or medical nutrition advice.

CLEANING & CARE

Is the bottle dishwasher safe?

Yes — top-rack dishwasher safe.

However, for best longevity, hand washing is recommended.

Is it easy to clean?

Absolutely! We hate those bottles that harbor black mould in tough to see places so both the bottle and fuel pod are designed with no hidden cavities or hard-to-reach areas, reducing the risk of mould or bacteria build-up.

ABOUT FYA

How do you say FYA?

We pronounce FYA as “FIRE.”

It stands for Fueling Youth Athletes — and reflects one of the ideas that sits at the heart of what we do: fueling their fire so young athletes can play lit and stay lit over the long term.

For us, that fire isn’t just about intensity on game day. It’s about energy, confidence, enjoyment, and building habits that support performance and healthy sporting lives.

Who is behind FYA?

FYA (Fueling Youth Athletes) was founded by Ben McFarlane and Billinda Connolly-Tevendale.

Ben is a former assistant principal, teacher, football coach, Director of Football, and a sports parent. Through his work in education and sport — and navigating youth sport as a parent — he noticed two consistent gaps. The first was under-fueling: young athletes putting in the effort but running low on energy because fueling was inconsistent, mistimed, or misunderstood.

The second was just as important: many athletes and parents lacked clear, practical understanding of what actually supports high performance, long-term health, and sustainable sporting lives — not just nutrition, but habits, recovery, balance, and decision-making over time.

Billinda has extensive experience in education and online communication, having hosted live calls and events with well-known public figures for many years. She has worked as an Acting Principal and Deputy Principal, bringing strong leadership experience within schools and a deep understanding of how systems support children and families. She is also a sports parent and team manager, giving her a practical, lived understanding of the realities families face on training nights, game days, and long weekends on the sideline.

We also partner with Dr Katie Scholfield, an elite sports nutritionist and former New Zealand world championship track cyclist, who helps guide our educational content and the development of future nutritional products so they are evidence-informed, practical, and appropriate for young athletes and their families.

Together, we built FYA to be education-first, product-second — supporting both energy availability and understanding, so young athletes can perform, grow, and stay healthy over the long term.

We’re hands-on, involved, and very real. If you email us, you’ll hear back from us.
